By Laylah Rhine

Memorial Day is a national holiday that is a day meant to honor our men and women who have served and died in the military. This holiday dates all the way back to the months after the Civil War when some of the towns began to honor the fallen. This day has also been called “Decoration Day”, “Memorial Day USA”, “Remembrance Memorial Day”, “US Memorial Day” and other things, but then it was declared as Memorial Day. It is not just a day that is celebrated though, it is normally a three-day weekend that it is celebrated. A proper way to honor this day is to go to cemeteries and place flags or flowers on the graves of our fallen heroes. It is also known that the American flag is supposed to be flown at half-staff until noon. When interviewed about what she does on Memorial Day Megan Zilla responded, “I normally go to my grandpas grave and then out to my grandma’s house for a picnic with my whole family .” It is also celebrated in many ways though, such as, parades, going to the beach, having cookouts, and just spending time with friends and family. When asked about how she celebrates Memorial Day, Taylor Rhine responded, “When I was younger my family and I would normally go camping over Memorial Day weekend since we had school off Monday, and we would do whatever the campground did to celebrate Memorial Day.” Memorial Day is a widely known holiday in the United States of America because US citizens would not have a country if it wasn’t for the men and the women that fought for the United States safety and freedom.
