The day after Thanksgiving is always an interesting time. Everyone sees on tv how Black Friday is portrayed. The question is if it’s really like news coverage.
Black Friday started because of a financial crisis that happened in 1869. Two Wall Street financiers bought a lot of gold and upped the price to get a profit. However, it caused the gold market and stock market to collapse. According to www.history.com millions went bankrupt on Friday, September 24.
The original term ”Black Friday” came into use in the 1950s by police officers in Philadelphia. They used this term because of the amount of people and chaos in the city in advance to a football game, as opposed to what we know as a shopping spree. It wasn’t untill the late 1980s when the term and holiday came into use around the nation.
Everyone has heard a horrific story about Black Friday. On people.com they have stories written like, “When I worked at Walmart, we had a fight break out over a bike. Fists were thrown and there was some blood. Eventually, one guy got ahold of it and managed to get away from the crowd. He rode the bike out of the store (without paying).” We don’t hear as many crazy Black Friday stories anymore. Ever since covid-19 people would rather stay in. Most stores now have online stores which also factors into the removal of crazy in person shopping. Many places have ”cyber Monday” sales that are more popular.
When asked what she does during Black Friday Leah Burnheimer, a cosmetology student, replied with, “It’s quite a hectic time. There are lots of people and is very crazy, but there are really good deals.” Trinity Thompson, a cosmetology student, was asked the same question but answered with, “It is definitely a lot different from what it used to be. Not as many people go now, even Ross Park didn’t have as many people.”
As everyone knows, Black Friday is one of the craziest times of the year. There are predictions that mobile shopping will take over more. Online shopping would be great to keep us safe from physical and health harms.
