Golden Retriever day falls on the 3rd of February. The day was sparked from a woman who was watching tv about other holidays and wondered why Golden Retrievers didn’t have one. However, what was the main role of a Golden Retriever to have them earn a day to honor this particular breed?
National Golden Retriever Day began in 2012. This holiday is still annually celebrated every year. The day was founded by a woman named Kristen Shroyer. Shroyer had made the holiday in honor of her dog who had died of cancer. The other main reason this day was made is to celebrate the companionship that Golden Retrievers have given to people since the 1800’s.

There is a plethora of ways to enjoy Golden Retriever day such as throwing a frisbee or stick, going on a walk with them, go swimming, playing tug of war, going to a dog park, or buying a bunch of treats for them. According to hepper.com, Golden Retrievers are athletic dogs that love being in family activities such as swimming. Golden Retrievers are built for swimming since they have webbed feet.
Dating back to the 1800s in the Scottish Highlands, Dudley Marjoribanks wanted to create the perfect “gun dog” that would retrieve game from his hunts. For 50 years Dudley kept breeding records between 1840 to 1890. Dudley mixed his yellow retriever with a tweed water spaniel. Later on, Irish setter and bloodhounds were also added into the mix of breeds. Years after Dudley’s time the Golden Retriever came about.
Golden Retriever day is a day about spending time with the golden furry fellows. The day could also go about people adopting a new Golden Retriever. This day shouldn’t be seen as the only day to celebrate Golden Retrievers, but to remind people that dogs are for more than just hunting, they are also companions to everyone.
