April is commonly known as a rainy and dreary month; the month before the flowers and sun come out. Many people believe that the only happy day in April is Easter, but there are plenty of other joyful events that happen during this month. For example, April 29th is National Peace Rose Day. It is a day to honor a beautiful type of rose called the Rosa Peace, or Peace Rose. This specific type of flower is typically yellow on the inside of the petals and pink on the outer edges. When interviewed, Christina Hiler stated, “ I really like the Peace Rose, it has a very pretty coloration.” It can grow up to 7 feet tall and is the perfect addition to any garden or bouquet. This flower also has an amazing back story. Francis Meilland, a French rose breeder, created this flower in 1935 for his mother. He named it Madame A. Meilland, in honor of her. When Germany invaded France in 1939, he sent some of them to his friends in other countries. He did this in hopes of preserving it during the war. It was introduced to the United States in 1945 by the Conard-Pyle Company. That day was also the day that the Berlin Wall fell to the Allies. For these reasons, it became a symbol for peace and freedom for many people, hence the name Peace Rose. It has won many different awards including the Garden Merit award given by the Royal Horticulture Society. It was also voted into the Rose Hall of Fame in 1976. When asked what her opinion on this rose is, Allison Urick stated, “The Peace Rose is my favorite kind of rose.” This rose is a favorite to many people and is a perfect source of happiness in the middle of all the rain.
