Getting to Know You Assembly

As the new school year begins most new students coming to Lenape are nervous. The one common worry is not knowing anyone.

Here at Lenape, the goal is to make everyone comfortable. The new student body will attend an assembly to get to know other students. At the assembly, students will participate in different activities to get to know one another.

Students will be put into separate groups with the hope that they do not know the other people in their group. Each group will have five different activities to do in rotation. While in these groups students will learn things about each other. Certain activities will include working together to problem solve. The activities will be conducted by the students in Skills USA.

The getting to know each other activities include picking up colored candy to answer questions, and catching a ball to answer the question the student’s thumb lands on. The rest of the activities are about teamwork. One of them is having students stand on a tarp and flip it without any student getting off. The other two are building a cup tower with limited resources and students must keep their ballon up while trying knock down the other group’s ballon.

Mr. Jasek, a Skills advisor, says “we’re trying to get different people from different shops from different schools to meet each other to get to know each other.” Keeley Furlong, a student in Allied Health and Skills USA, says “Skills USA is basically student council. We’re trying to get the student body to know everybody. So, someone from Freeport isn’t going to know someone from Armstrong necessarily. We want everyone to break out of their shop class because your shop becomes your family. We want you to have friends outside of your shop family.”

As the assembly happens hopefully students will become friends with their other peers. Do not be scared to talk to someone new. There is always a chance to make new friends that can last a lifetime.
