Veterans day

Veterans Day is a day to honor the people who have and are currently serving our country. It also honors the ones who aren’t here today. People have different ways of celebrating it and some even mourn it. A lot of people think of veterans’ day as a day to appreciate what veterans did for our country.

Veterans day was set on November 11th after WW1. The reason why veteran’s day was set on November 11th is because an armistice between the Allied and Germany went into effect on the 11th month, 11th day, and 11th hour. Veterans day was formally called “Armistice Day”. People originally celebrated with parades, public meetings, and business talks. In May of 1938, the act was approved to make November 11th a legal holiday every year from there out.

Veterans have this day to be shown appreciation for what they have done to protect our county and countries we allied with. Not all veterans are here to celebrate it due to passing away from old age or injuries from battle. Every year people honor these soldiers for how hard they have fought for this country, so people feel safe. When interviewing Keith Lazaron, a veteran who served in the army and a substitute teacher at Lenape Tech, he said, “I served in the army for eight years. My job was a military police officer. My experience was good, bad, unforgettable, and every mixed emotion in between. I was injured during my service time, and I am suffering the heartache. But not all was terrible. I formed a sense of comradery, teamwork, and leadership. I learned to place the mission first, never accept defeat and never quit. It gave me a sense of pride, and I can apply all the above to my work. Veterans day is something to reflect about my years in the service. I would rather spend the day alone, because it’s something I’ve always done.”

People celebrate Veterans Day in different ways. Some people will write a card or donate. Elementary schools will encourage children to make a card to send to veterans and collect food that they have in the pantry to donate. Other people will attend veterans’ events or invite some veterans to dinner.  When interviewing Ciera Anderson, a student from Allied Health, she said, “I celebrate Veterans Day by thinking of all those who lost their lives fighting for our country and my family tries to get everyone together that is in either the army, navy, marines, or air forces that’s there to come home and celebrate while we keep everyone in our hearts.”

Veterans day is not only a day we honor veterans, but also a day to celebrate them. People who have lost their loved ones tend to mourn but also celebrate the time they had together.
