Abraham Lincoln was the 16th president of the United States. He plays an important part in US history. He is well known for a lot of achievements like being president during the civil war.

Lincoln was born February 12, 1809, in Hardin County, Kentucky. His family then moved to Indiana, where Abraham went to school. He did become involved in politics until around 1834. He was also opposed to slavery like his Whig Party, a political party, heroes Henry Clay and Daniel Webster. Lincoln moved to Springfield and worked as a lawyer after teaching himself law. In 1842 Abraham got married to Mary Todd, having four kids together, but only one lived to adulthood. According to www.history.com.

In 1846 Abraham won his election to the House of Representatives. He did not run for reelection due to the unpopular stance he had with Illinois voters. Lincoln went back into politics to fight against slavery. He declared that slavery went against the Declaration of Independence. Many Republicans chose him as their candidate. Lincoln didn’t become president until 1860 and won again in 1864. His election caused the civil war to start in 1860, but it also stopped when he was still president in 1865. Abraham was then assassinated by John Wilkes Booth on April 15, 1865.

When asked what they knew about Abraham Lincoln Madison Croyle, a cosmetology student, answered, “I know he plays an important role in American history by ending slavery.” Lily Lias, a cosmetology student, was asked what she knew about Lincoln she replied, “He was a president that did a lot, like ended slavery. He also was assassinated in a theater.”

Lincoln shall and will always be remembered. Not just for his assassination, but for the way he stood up for everyone’s freedom. People should celebrate his birthday or at least show him great gratitude on President’s Day.
