Some theorize that the idea of April Fools\u2019 Day dates back to ancient Rome and a festival called \u201cHilaria\u201d which was held at the end of March. People would dress up in disguises and mock or imitate\u202fothers. Many folklorists believe it may go back to 16th-century France. Charles\u202fIX\u202fdecreed that the new year would begin on January 1. Back in those times, New Year\u2019s Day was around\u202fEaster\u202fand there were spring festivals with a whole week of partying. Some folks were slow to catch on to the change, continuing to celebrate the new year. They quickly became the victim of jokes and pranks, including having paper fish put on their backs and labeled a \u201cpoisson d\u2019avril,\u201d meaning April\u202ffish.\u202fThere are variations between countries in the celebration of April Fools\u2019 Day, but all have in common an excuse to make someone play the fool. The reason for being labeled\u202f<em>poisson d\u2019avril<\/em>\u202f(\u201cApril fish\u201d), perhaps in reference to a young fish and hence to one that is easily caught. In Scotland\u202fthe day is Gowkie Day, for the gowk, or\u202fcuckoo, a symbol of the fool and,\u202f\u202fon the following day signs reading \u201ckick me\u201d are pinned to friends\u2019 backs. In many countries newspapers and the other media participate\u2014for example, with false headlines or news stories.
