After the spooks and scares of October, the days continue to grow darker as Daylight Saving Time occurs. The first Sunday of November, which this year (2025) is November 2<\/span>nd<\/span>, is the end of Daylight Saving, also known as fall back. Many question why this is done, and where this tradition comes from, and this article is the answer.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

For starters, Daylight Saving is done to maximize the number of hours of sunlight people can get every day as night takes up more time, so it\u2019s a bit lighter in the mornings after falling back. If Daylight Saving wasn\u2019t implemented, the daylight left in the Winter would potentially be wasted.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Students at Lenape Tech were asked what they think is the reason for Daylight Saving is. Many said that it was for farmers, but this isn\u2019t the case. Daylight Saving was officially implemented by Germany during World War I in 1916, the United States following this as it helped conserve much needed energy. Daylight Saving only fully came into effect nation-wide in 1966 with the Uniform Time Act.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

People very often say something along the lines of \u201cWe have Daylight Savings for farmers\u201d and this idea has two problems. One is that \u201cDaylight Savings\u201d is actually the incorrect term, there is no \u201cs\u201d at the end of it. The greater issue is that farmers supporting Daylight Saving is a myth- not true in the slightest. In fact, most farmers have historically opposed Daylight Saving, as this disrupts the entire farm\u2019s schedule. Farmers have always been used to waking up before the sun rises and ending the day far after the sun sets, so DST \u201cmaximizing their daylight\u201d doesn\u2019t affect them overall. The real problem lies with farmers with cows. Dairy cows depend on a regular schedule to be milked daily, and when this schedule is thrown off, it causes them to be uncomfortable and even producing far less milk than they would normally. <\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
