Real vs Fake: What Kind of Christmas Tree is Better? By Allison Bowser

Christmas time is associated with many things; snow, nose-nipping weather, holiday presents, and end of year parties, but one of the more iconic things (especially for those who celebrate Christmas) is the Christmas tree. Putting up a tree is a tradition predating the seventeenth century, and just as society has, Christmas trees have evolved too. Nowadays, it is more common to see a plastic tree than a real one standing tall in your living room. So why the change? What are the pros and cons between having a real tree versus a fake one? With research and interviews, the pros and cons of both can be laid out for people to see. 

Fake trees 

PROS  CONS 
  • Cheaper 
  • Low maintenance 
  • Reusable 
  • Hypoallergenic 
  • Lightweight 
  • Easy to assemble 
  • Pet safe 
  • No needle cleanup 
  • Some come with built in lights 
  • Doesn’t always look real 
  • Takes up storage space 
  • Not very environmentally friendly 
  • Doesn’t smell like real pine 
  • Feel weird 
  • Doesn’t come with the family tradition of picking it out 
  • Not decomposable 

 

Real Trees 

PROS  CONS 
  • Authentic pine tree smell 
  • Environmentally friendly 
  • Takes up no storage space 
  • Decomposable 
  • Make memories picking out and cutting one down with your family 
  • Looks nicer 
  • Feed to farm animals after the fact (if you have goats) 
  • Can trigger allergies (whether it has a scent or not) 
  • More expensive 
  • Not reusable 
  • Upkeep required 
  • Drops needles 
  • Not pet safe 
  • Do not come with built-in lights
