Labor Day Plans By Tristin Krecota

Lenape Tech’s first day of school was August 18th. For most of those who arrived in the morning it was their first time stepping foot into the building and others faced the idea this was their last year. This is Lenape Vo Tech’s school article. Despite the vague flow with new and old, Lenape Tech often falls into place by the third day.
With the new year rolling on with new students, part-time or full-time, it brings in new experiences to the school itself and the classes are filled with work and new responsibilities despite being the first week of school bringing stress and an urge to adapt. With that Labor Day Weekend follows suite giving most a much-needed break from the rapid changes from Summer into the School year, allowing both students and the staff to have the 1st of September.
Despite the day off many don’t know the origin of Labor Day, not that it truly defines what makes America, but its story does bring understanding of what the holiday is meant to represent. This starts in the late 1890s with Peter J. McGuire and Matthew Maguire. At the time the United States was booming with both work and economic values increasing throughout the country, especially the case in New York, but it was only after a mass of struggles for better working conditions and a standard of 8-hour workdays.
With the insight to make right of all the violence that had occurred in trying to establish these work conditions such as the Haymarket Riot that was a brutal confrontation between the police and the protesters that resulted with a bomb being thrown and the police themselves opening fire. 7 officers died and 60 others were wounded; it became the center point for the introduction of a holiday trying to both rectify all the bloody events that have happened and allow others to celebrate what they have because of those events had led to.
Various unions took the First of September to take the day to run parades. But despite the simple way to celebrate the holiday it was made to try and bring everyone together. When the holiday arrives, everyone has different ways to celebrate them. The most original way for it to be celebrated is through parades, in which every parade has a different way of celebrating as it varies for everyone from home barbeque to dinner out with the family.
Another common way for most to celebrate is a picnic. Of course everyone has their own way of doing it, but it often involves everyone gathering around. Mr. Veronesi from Lenape tech says, “Commonly Labor Day is when I go to my in-laws for a big ‘ol picnic, but with allergies I was stuck in bed.” Besides Labor Day not being that large of a holiday does give others the chance to join, but others not so much. Mrs. Purvis says, “Our family has a get together for Labor Day with a picnic, but we were all too busy for it. It was simply mutual, and I enjoyed my Labor Day to relax.”
In the end even with family or the parade that may have occurred, we still celebrate one way or another, to take the day for ourselves to relax or go out and enjoy the time with others to celebrate Labor Day,
