National Cat Day By: Deborah Barron
National Cat Day is a day to celebrate our fuzzy companions. The US celebrates it in the month of October, specifically on the 29th. However, this day isn’t just a day to treat them well, it also is a holiday that attempts to shed light on the millions of cats who are abandoned and end up in shelters every year. In 2024, 2.2 million cats were adopted, 362,000 were returned to their owner or the field, 273,000 were euthanized, and 369,000 were transferred to other organizations. A student from the Tech said they have “four cats and the names are Mufasa, Tiger, Kiky and Grim and that I love them dearly.” Another student from the tech said, “I have two cats, named Fluffcins and Root beer. I love them lots, even though they can be brats.” The day was launched by Colleen Paige, she is a conservationist, an animal behaviorist, and a pet lifestyle expert. She also is behind other similar days, like National Dog Day and National Pet Day. If you want to support and help on this day, or any, hears some ways you can.
- Adoption
- Support the local shelter
- Play with your cat and give lots of love

There’s a cafe in Greensburg called the Cattfeinated Cat Cafe. If people want to head over there and support them, get some coffee and visit or even adopt cats, they can. In conclusion, National Cat Day is a great way to celebrate and show extra love to the fuzzy little creatures. It’s also a day to bring love and joy into our lives and raise awareness for the importance of caring and adoption.
